I'm sure you've heard by now that Google is purchasing YouTube for a cool $1.65 Bazillion. That means, among other things, that there are now two more 20-something multi-multi-millionaires in Silicon Valley. As Steve Ballmer of Microsoft wryly observed, if YouTube truly IS the future of TV, the $1.6B is worth it, but if not...
One issue that may be the fly in the ointment is the possibility that copyright concerns may limit the kind of content that YouTube will be allowed to carry...and that is no small concern. Recently Mark Cuban and others have raised this issue. The other big question is how Google will turn YouTube into a profit-making venture. The obvious approach would be to leverage Google's expertise with contextual advertising and move into video ads...something that YouTube had not done. It's an interesting interactive media world out there...stay tuned.
